Second Battle of Bull Run - 1862

General Situation

Both factions are well mobilized. McClellan, and the Army of the Potomac, were defeated during Lee's Seven Days Campaign and began to withdraw to Washington from the Virginian peninsula bordered by the James and York Rivers. Lee moved his Army of Northern Virginia north threatening the Union capital at Washington. To meet this threat, Lincoln appointed General Pope to command the forces defending Washington, including some of McClellan's returning corps, as a new army. His purpose, to block Lee, resulted in the second battle near Manassas Junction.
