General Situation

Despite the Army of the Potomac's brilliant flanking action under the command of General Hooker, which placed the bulk of his army in Lee’s rear. Lee and the Rebel Army of Northern Virginia were able to take advantage of Hooker’s inaction, leading to one of Lee’s most inspired victories at the battle of Chancellorsville. Though Jackson died in the battle, Lee, greatly buoyed by his victory, again moved across the Potomac River, invading Northern territory one last time. This invasion resulted in the most famous engagement of the Civil war, the battle of Gettysburg.
